Slay monochromatic dressing like a pro! By Mughni Che Din
From the catwalks of major fashion weeks, working-from-home to the recent Inauguration day, it’s all about monochrome right now. With everyone from Beyonce, Kim Kardashian West to Michelle Obama all sporting this trend, it is safe to say that monochromatic dressing is having a major moment.
WHAT IS MONOCHROMATIC STYLE?
As the name suggests, “mono” meaning one and “chromatic” meaning colour; a monochromatic style consists of an outfit in the same colour or different shades of the same colour.
Monochrome dressing has evolved tremendously over the years and has moved away from simple black and white outfit, with everything from tailored suits to sweats being offered up in luxurious neutrals and attention-grabbing hues.
GUIDE TO MONOCHROMATIC DRESSING
- SELECT YOUR DESIRED COLOUR
Your first step is perhaps the easiest, start by selecting the colour or tone that you want to work with. In that regard, ensure that you are selecting a colour that complement and enhance your skin tone or hair colour.
- TEXTURE PLAY
Consider mixing textures within your monochromatic outfit. This will help to add visual interest, depth and dimension to your ensemble so that it’s not one-dimensional or drabby.
- BALANCING ACT
Balance is key when it comes to monochromatic dressing. Therefore, it is important that you keep the proportions of your outfit in check in order to make you stylishly tall and lean. For example, if you are wearing a loose top, consider pairing it with fitted bottoms—vice versa.
- DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
Fashion is about feeling great in looks (or trends) we love and feeling great in who we are. Women come in all different shapes and sizes, so you when it comes to monochromatic style, it’s all about knowing your body to accentuate your best features and hide everything else.
PRO TIP: if you have wider form the waist down and want to deemphasize them, consider wearing a darker shade for your bottoms and opt for lighter tone on top.
- ACCESSORIZE, ACCSESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE!
Choosing the right accessories and footwear can help elevate and add visual appeal to your monochromatic outfit. For instance, adding a belt to cinch the waist can help to add structure and enhance your feminine silhouette. On the other hand, choosing shoes or handbags with contrasting texture (patent, leather, etc...) adds sophistication and elegance.
