Exude comfort and ease in this season’s most covetable shift dresses. By Mughni Che Din
Just like the statement blazer or a pair of vintage denim jeans, another wardrobe staple every woman should have is the shift dress. Timeless, versatile and comfortable: the boxy silhouette is universally flattering, and has had stood the test of time.
WHAT IS A SHIFT DRESS?
Typically, a shift dress hangs straight down from the shoulders with clean and simple line. The dress should fall loosely from the body without a fitted cut. Though it is generally sleeveless, it is common to find styles that features short-sleeves or off-shoulder variations.
THE HISTORY OF SHIFT DRESS
The shift dress was a massive trend in the early ‘60s –think supermodel Twiggy and Mary Quant— which makes it a natural fit for everything from festival wear to warm summer attire. However, the origins of the shift dress date back to the ‘20s, pioneered by French couturier Coco Chanel— known for designing loose, anti-corset dresses in the roaring ‘20s flapper style, simple neckline and straight, boxy waist. These details eventually gave rise to the shift dress.
HOW TO WEAR IT?
1. DRESS IT UP
The shift dress is intended for comfort and convenience (aka lazy days). Therefore, when it comes to styling— minimalism is key. Consider pairing it with a statement-making bag, minimalistic accessories and comfy loafers or sneakers.
2. ADD A LAYER
If you are concerned or self-conscious about exposing your ‘bingo wings’, fret not, consider wearing a t-shirt or long sleeve top underneath your shift dress. This ‘90s style hack is perfect to elevate your style game.
