DOWN TO EARTH

Earth tones is having a renaissance in fashion, exuding the warmth we all need. By Mughni Che Din

Earthy tones are on the rise. From monochromatic shades of beige, browns, green and grey, the earth tone palette dominated the Autumn/Winter ’21 runways. If you think this is some kind coincidence, think again. According to Jules Standish, author of ‘How Not to Wear Black’, “Warm hues make us feel comfortable and bring us the feeling of safety.” After a year of lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic, designers sent a hopeful message by incorporating comforting hues inspired by natural shades.

EARTH TONES ARE THE NEW BLACK

After years dominated by loud graphics, logomania and outrageous prints, the rediscovery of a more muted, clean and polished imagery, is made up of all the simple and clean silhouettes in the both warm and cold natural palette.

On the streets, our favourite streetstyle mavens like Camilla Coelho puts a feminine twist to this trend by opting to layer a plunging V-neckline dress over her turtleneck top in monochromatic hues, while Yoyo Cao takes the rugged route by teaming earth-toned separates, camo puffer jacket and a pair of aviators (think Maverick from Top Gun meets Bianca Jagger).

HOW TO WEAR EARTHY COLOURS

1. EARTH TONES SERVE AS NEUTRALS.

Just like black and navy, tones like chocolate brown, clay red, cognac, and olive all serve as neutral colours. That being said, feel free to take some of your brighter colours, prints and patterns that are already in your wardrobe and work them in with your earth tone pieces.

2. TEXTURE PLAY

If you are opting to go monochrome, consider layering different textures to keep the look interesting. Think chunky cable knit sweaters, wool coats or snakeskin boots.

3. ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE!

Accessories are essential when it comes to making this trend work in your favour. However, it can also make or break your outfit; therefore, you need to choose wisely. Opt for minimalistic yellow gold jewelleries to complement the warm earthy palate. For handbags and shoes, opt for complementary colours and add some textures to give your outfit that extra ZING.
