For the longest time, custom fits and figure-hugging clothes have been in power in the fashion scene. However, one of the latest trends that is quickly gaining popularity is oversize dressing. Pioneered by luxury fashion houses like Gucci, Balenciaga, The Row and Prada— this trend is breaking all fashion rules and we are here for it!

With countless outfits spotted on and off the runway, the outcome is stacked in favor of this tricky trend, but what is the best way to pull it off IRL? Here are some tips to get you started:

1. BUY OVERSIZED, NOT BIG

Don’t try to cheat the system. For example, if a clothing item is two sizes too big for you, don’t try to pass it as oversize. Although the motto of this trend is “ bigger the better”, you want the clothes to still fit purposefully at the shoulders and at the waist.

2. IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

The golden rule when it comes to oversize dressing is to ensure that you get the proportion right. Think of your body as a triangle or an upside-down triangle. If you plan to wear an oversized jacket, keep the bottoms slim and if you opt for voluminous bottom like a balloon skirt or a palazzo pants, keep the top fitted as it will help balance out the look. 

3. LESS IS MORE

With oversized clothes, less is definitely more. It is better to keep accessories to a minimal and instead of big shoulder bags and totes, go for dainty clutch bags. Keeping footwear simple and not going over the top, with chunky and grungy boots, will help streamline the silhouette of your outfit.

4. SHAPE UP

In order not to drown in your oversized outfits, it is important to add a little shape and structure to the garment— especially if you are petite and still want to pull off this trend successfully. Accessorizing with a belt or tucking in the top at waist usually does the trick.

5. GO MONOCHROME

If you want to ease yourself into this trend, we suggest that you opt for monochromatic sets before you try experimenting with different combos. On a separate note, monochromatic dressing will make you look lean and tall— which is a huge plus.
